Turning the Tide Workshop: Eating the Dead – How Plants can Teach us about our Ancestors

2015_ttt

We are so excited to announce the next workshop that will be presented at Turning the Tide 2015.

Eating the Dead: How Plants can Teach Us about our Ancestors

Ancestral energy runs through our genealogy, our bodies, and blood. Ancestral agreements between green bloods (the plant world) and red bloods (humans) form who we are today and by exploring ancestral foods we can learn more about those ancient agreements. This workshop will introduce basic and helpful information about working with ancestral energy in a variety of forms but especially through working with plants that have strong ties to our ancestry. By reviewing the long and magickal process of plant domestication, a complicated contract between humans and plants, we will learn tools for coming into alignment and agreement with the plants that fed the bodies of our ancestors. Those same bodies (and plants) in turn fed the earth where our ancestors lived and worked alongside plant devas. We will conclude with discussion (and feast!) of three plants that are key to common ancestral groups such as the Celtic, Native American, and West African peoples. We will contact the overarching devas of these three plants who knew and cared for our ancestors. Please bring your own bowl and utensil for the feast

Our Eating the Dead workshop will be offered by Rayna Templebee. Rayna Templebee is a daughter of the Ocean Mother and a bee priestess. She is a student of faery seership as taught by Orion Foxwood and has been an initiated Witch since 1983. The Mighty Dead keep her very busy.

Turning the Tide Workshop: Connecting with the Ancestors through the Dark Goddess

2015_ttt

We are so excited to announce the second of the workshops that will be presented at Turning the Tide 2015.

Connecting with the Ancestors through the Dark Goddess

This workshop involves discussion and ritual to help us connect with the Ancestors through a journey to the Dark Goddess. Through a guided descent into the Underworld, the Realm of the Ancestors where the Dark Goddess reigns, participants can develop and nurture personal ancestral bonds. This is a co-ed workshop. This session is two-fold:

Discussion: How we can work with the Dark Goddess to connect with the Ancestors, and preparation for ritual.

Ritual Journey: Inspired by the Descent of Inanna, participants will descend into the Underworld, passing through three gates as they descend, and three gates during the ascent. This is a ritual of transformation. During the Descent, we are challenged at each of the three gates, and meet the Dark Mother. During the Ascent, participants will reflect upon the messages received and the gifts of the Ancestors.

This workshop is hosted by members and friends of Daughters of the Goddess (DOTG). We are a private group of women who share circles to learn, support each other, develop our craft, and to create sacred space. It is facilitated by Rhiannon Morribrid, Strix, and Jette.

We are so excited to announce the first of the workshops that will be presented at Turning the Tide 2015.

This workshop will focus on creating and maintaining an Altar to your Ancestors, and sharing our experiences of what works for each of us. Some of the topics that will be covered include:

  • What are ideal projects to ask your Ancestors to help with?

Our Touching the Past workshop will be offered by Lady Bridget. Lady Bridget has been HPS of Witch & Famous coven for over 20 years. She practices Welsh-Celtic Witchcraft, as well as incorporates hoodoo conjure styles and Faery Seership practices into her own lifestyle.

Reaching for the Moon Podcast – Episode 14: Lughnassadh 2015

Reaching for the Moon Podcast

Welcome to the 14th episode of Reaching for the Moon, the podcast brought to you by the Witches and Pagans of Everglades Moon Local Council. As we honor the sacrifice of the Warrior God, Lugh, we’ve got a special treat for you!

LISTEN TO US ON: ITUNES | STITCHER | LIBSYN | ON THIS PAGE

Our Lughnassadh podcast features the workshop, “The Warrior’s Mindset” presented by Edward G. Rickey during Equinox in the Oaks. We’ve been saving this workshop especially for this episode since this is the time of year that we honor the Warrior Gods.

We’ve broken up the workshop with some great music, including:

  • “Gwydion’s Song to Lieu” by Emerald Rose, from their album “Archives of Ages Past”
  • “We Won’t Sleep Tonight” by Crow Women, whose music can be found at their website

You can learn more about Edward Rickey at his blog, Jet Black Wings. He also generously provided us with a resource list if you are interested in learning more about the Warrior Way:

Living the Martial Way – Forrest E. Morgan
The single best book I own on this subject. Heavily leaning towards practicing Asian martial artists, the information can and should be applied more broadly.

The Book of Five Rings – Miyamoto Musashi
The preeminent swordfighter of Japanese history, at age sixty he sat down to write his thoughts after winning 35 duels and establishing his own school of fencing. As with any Japanese/Chinese literature, read several translations, since a single character can have several meanings. Some writers imply all or some alternate meanings, and good translators will work to include the nuances. I have the Cleary translation from Shambala Press.

Jarhead – Anthony Swofford
This is the book I read the passage from.

On Killing – Dave Grossman
Source of the Sheepdog/Wolf analogy.

33 Strategies of War – Robert Greene
Amazing sourcebook from all across classical literature. He uses all kinds of sources to illustrate the systems that win wars. Two of his other books, 48 Laws of Power and The Art of Seduction are ones I highly recommend.

Leaders Eat Last – Simon Sinek
While specifically focusing on team or corporate leadership, Sinek’s work is good for understanding the relationships in organizations and the source of the hormones of emotion that I mentioned.

King Warrior Magician Lover – Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette
A so-so book about warriorship, but a good discussion on male archetypes and how they work or fail.

The Tao of Jeet Kun Do – Bruce Lee
Any practicing martial artist needs to read this book.

Guerilla Warfare – Che Guevarra
Focuses on the relationship between a warfighter and the people he fights for. If you can set aside the politics, an excellent book. If this is your speed, follow it up with Mao Tse Tung’s book On Guerrilla Warfare.

Secrets of the Samurai – Oscar Ratti and Adelle Westbrook
Kooky title but a very good overview of Budo, or the Way of the Warrior in Japan.

Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere – Oscar Ratti and Adelle Westbrook
Probably the best book ever written on the subject.

The Last Article (short story) – Harry Turtledove
A short story in sort of an alternate history. The Nazis defeat the British and invade India, and then have to deal with Ghandi. There’s a powerful lesson here, and an easy read.

The Sword and the Mind – tr. and ed. Hirosaki Sato
This book is a translation of two of the main manuals for swordfighting in the Yagyu-ryu school, known as family-books.

In addition I’d like to suggest three other sources. They all have Youtube channels and you might learn something from them.

First in Travis Haley, owner of Haley Strategic. He coined the phrase “higher standard of care” that I used.
Haley Strategic

Second is Chris Costa, owner of Costa Ludis training.
Costa Ludis

Third is James Yeager, owner of Tactical Response. He is the source of the comment “I don’t kill people, I protect people. In protecting people, sometimes bad guys die”.
