The members of Everglades Moon Local Council are reflecting on gratitude as we celebrate the Autumn Equinox, a time of balance and reflection. As we approach Samhain, a sacred time to honor the presence and sacrifices of our ancestors, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting human dignity and standing against hatred in all its forms.
In 1804, the people of Haiti achieved a monumental victory, successfully overthrowing colonial rule and enslavement by France. This historic moment marked Haiti as the birthplace of freedom. However, nations like the United States turned their backs on Haiti, fearing that this triumph of emancipation would inspire the end of slavery elsewhere. Hate speech cannot erase Haiti’s profound contribution to the fight for liberty.
We recognize the seductive nature of power and the ways it can be used to perpetuate fear and division. The recent attacks of bigotry and misinformation targeting the Haitian community are a direct result of centuries of anti-Black racism and xenophobia. These hateful words are designed to dehumanize Haitian immigrants and perpetuate false narratives.
We demand an immediate end to the vile rhetoric and baseless accusations directed at the Haitian community. We stand in solidarity with our Haitian neighbors, resolutely opposing the centuries of hate they have endured. Racism and bigotry have no place in our society, and together, we will continue to fight for justice and equality for all.
