The Fall of 2026 is bringing a new wave of interest in Witches and Witchcraft through popular entertainment, from films such as Practical Magic 2 and Disney’s forthcoming animated film Hexed to series drawing on Witchcraft themes, including American Horror Story and Coven Academy.
As with all portrayals of religion and spirituality in popular entertainment, these stories blend fantasy, folklore, imagination, and elements that may resemble actual religious practices. Witches and Wiccans understand that films and television are created primarily to tell stories, not to provide accurate accounts of religious traditions. Similar narrative liberties are taken in portrayals of virtually every faith and spiritual practice.
At the same time, popular portrayals of Witchcraft can have an impact beyond entertainment. They may inspire curiosity and encourage people to learn more about contemporary Witchcraft and Wicca. They may also generate questions or concerns, particularly among people whose understanding of Witchcraft has been shaped by religious teachings, popular culture, or misconceptions about our traditions.
The Covenant of the Goddess welcomes both curiosity and sincere inquiry.
To members of other religious communities who may have questions or concerns, we respect and encourage interfaith dialogue. The Covenant is open to authentic conversation about Wicca, Witchcraft, and the beliefs and practices of our members. Our religious and spiritual traditions are diverse, but they commonly include reverence for nature, personal responsibility, community, and the ability of individuals to meet the challenges of their lives with wisdom and intention. We invite honest questions and respectful conversation.
To those whose curiosity about Witchcraft has been awakened by a film, television series, book, or other work of popular culture, we invite you to learn more. Entertainment can open a door, but it need not be the end of the journey. Speaking with experienced practitioners is one way to discover the rich diversity of beliefs, traditions, practices, and communities that exist within contemporary Witchcraft.
The Covenant of the Goddess and its members are guided by established ethical principles. Reaching out to a Covenant member with questions, or, when appropriate, accepting an invitation to attend a public ritual or community event, can provide an opportunity to meet exceptionally experienced practitioners and learn about the Craft from people who live and practice these traditions.
Whether you come with curiosity, questions, or simply a desire to understand your neighbors better, we welcome respectful conversation.
Popular culture may introduce people to the idea of Witchcraft. We invite you to discover the people, communities, and living traditions beyond the screen.
